They knew who he was and should have known what would happen. Now he and Trump get to profit off more alt-right rage.

I think what it comes down to is that they intend to profit off the controversy, only to realize - belatedly - that 1) the “controversy” is exactly the intent, and 2) there’s no way they can profit from it. The fact that others have made the exact same mistake seems not to deter others from trying.
