I was called for jury duty there once. I was in San Bernardino County. I had to get up at 4 AM to catch the bus to downtown LA for the thing where you can asked to be excused. I was, for the heinous journey it involved. A couple weeks later, I got a $100 check in the mail to cover my expenses. I kicked myself for passing on a very interesting, slightly profitable adventure. Lots of bus time, though.

The only time I ever got called for jury duty was when I was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Med. According to Navy Regulations, a command is supposed to release you for jury duty regardless of where you are stationed, unless you are so-called critical personnel. My command wouldn’t release me. (Pretty much everyone on a deployed ship is critical, since if you’re gone there is no replacement for you.)
