357 are a bigger and more powerful round, but because of that are more expensive to use in target shooting by a lot, and are mostly made as revolvers rather than semi-auto. 9mm are smaller and probably the most common round after the .22, which makes them cheaper to train with (by about half, last I checked). They are also more commonly made as semi-autos, if you like that sort of thing.
Ha! As I read this I had Dirty Harry suddenly jump in my mind to remind me: “do you feel lucky, punk?”
Seems like the 9mm would offer more affordable options.
