I think the games should have been canceled, because they were essentially forced on Tokyo despite protestations from the public at large. Whether there it is a significant blunder depends greatly on vaccination rates among the athletes. What we aren’t hearing is whether the positives are athletes (or support staff) who have been vaccinated. If the overwhelming majority of the athletes, coaching staffs, support crew, etc. etc. are vaccinated (and it would be really dumb if vaccinations weren’t required—but we live in the stupidest timeline, so….), it shouldn’t be a huge deal even if there are some breakthrough infections.

We’ll see. Regardless of vaccination and infection rates among the athletes and support, they’re all going back to their home countries in a month, where vaccination rates are probably very low. This could be a bad worldwide superspreader event resulting in thousands of needless deaths.
