Might you mean Pillars of the Earth? If so, I agree; a very good read. If you liked that, I’d also throw in Edward Rutherfurd’s Sarum.

yes, I got that exactly wrong…’Cathedral’ is a Nelson DeMille book…I read ‘Sarum’…a little slow but very good….’Pillars’ was an awsome story and the sequel ‘World Without End’ was nearly but not quite as good
