Just so. Remember that however much Republicans hate Barack Obama, David Petraeus has been very popular with all but the Paulians within the GOP. For one of the GOP to have taken him down over an affair would have gained the party nothing and possibly cost it critical enthusiasm the GOP was counting on at the polls. (We know know that enthusiasm wasn’t fully there, but that’s not what the party leadership was being told a month ago).
