He’d had substance abuse problems, and apparently was also a survivor of abuse as a child, TMZ describes it like this:

The singer struggled with drugs and alcohol for years. He had said in the past he had considered committing suicide because he had been abused as a child by an older male

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we can’t escape our demons. Hopefully he finds peace
