re: #488 dangerman
for nostalgia, not one-upmanship
to save on timesharing costs (1200baud modem, “dial” up), the first computer i/my company bought for business was a Wang 2200 SVP
the monitor cost like $3k.
the cpu was way more
aside from the size and weight this is my takeaway:cpu - 56k (yes k)
no internal disk drive
2 1MB 8 inch floppy drives - one for programs one for datatoday a generic phone is free with a 2 year plan and fits in my pocket….
nevertheless we saved and made a fortune with that boat anchor
Army was still buying a lot of desktop Wangs, phasing them out in the late 80s. My shop had one of the few remaining ones in a distant overseas base, so at staff meetings I could boast that I had “the last functioning Wang in the command”.
