That’s what I was thinking.

I don’t like Assange. I saw a documentary on WikiLeaks at SXSW and walked out of it convinced the guy is a complete sociopath, and that whatever good intentions he claims to have are canceled out by his ego and his total disregard for the real world consequences of his actions. Still, embassies are sovereign soil. Sending in troops to an embassy to get him would be a definite act of aggression against Ecuador.

While it is true that there are very bad real world consequences of the leaks that come out of there, I am left to wonder who is the greater villain: The government that undertakes actions that would result in those consequences if the truth ever came out about them, or the man that exposes that truth. Perhaps, just perhaps, those situations shouldn’t even be created in the first place?

Assange can legitimately be viewed as a Bad Guy for exposing the giant mountain of lies and corruption that the modern world is built upon, but perhaps the better response is not to get caught up in nailing the Bad Guy, but in changing the world so that there aren’t as many things to be exposed about it.
