One thing that almost all conservatives seem to have in common is a punitive streak. The way to fix any problem is to “get tough” on it. If your solution comes away with nobody getting the shit end of the stick, it’s not “tough”, and if it’s too beneficial to everyone, it’s egalitarian and possibly socialist, and therefore evil.

Really? So if someone chose, on misguided principal, not to pay taxes, liberals would not seek punitive action? You’d be aghast if the government put them in jail or took their home or hit them with insane charges and fines? No, there are consequences. You want government services you pay taxes or pay for the services somehow. It is not a conservative or liberal thing the consequences of not doing this.
The city had a right to charge, the family shoud’ve paid, but it was morally abhorrent to allow this home to burn down. If you’re looking for a cautionary tale, it’s this-conservatives who refuse to support the government will want government assistance when needed. It is also that morality should sometimes trump procedure, governmental or otherwise.
