I did not know that. I recall he was making commercials for TV.

Anyway, I actually was never into the Italian zombie movies which were all gore and no story.

Romero’s zombie movies touched on American life and the fears around it (it is not sustainable a lifestyle, consumerism, racism, etc) and they are the only horror movies I like - I am more of a sci-fi fan and was never into horror movies per say (unless there was a sci-fi element like Invasion of the Body Snatchers).
