He befriended a couple of expats on FB, and has been hitting the beach with them, and improving his health by swimming in the ocean, but on rainy days, he’s quieter, and his health was not great when he left. That was our biggest concern for him.

The medical stuff is absolutely what would worry me. On our first international trip together, mr. klys and I went to Mexico. While at San Miguel de Allende (which, coincidentally, has a large expat population), we managed to get a nasty bout of food poisoning that ended up being salmonella. Had a doctor make a house call (thanks to the assistance of the proprietors of the bed and breakfast we were staying at), discovered where my medical Spanish was and was not sufficient, and the meds we were prescribed turned out to have some potentially fatal side effects. (Fortunately didn’t happen!)
