I have to disagree. Japan, although somewhat more liberal since the end of the war, is still a very striated society. The Ainu in Hokkaido are still treated as less than Japanese. The Korean immigrants, even after several generations, have a terrible time getting citizenship, and tanners are still treated as untouchables.

It’s a very complex society. Lot to admire about Japan and how they’ve become successful post WWII and as much as I dislike him historically, credit is due to MacArthur but there are problems with the society too. That of course doesn’t justify acting like an ugly American when visiting as I know you agree.
