The irony to me is the places where Eugene Debs was most successful running as an outright socialist are now the places that are staunchly Republican and claim to be against “big government” but the truth is conservative voters are fine with big government if it benefits them and theirs and that’s why I despise right wing politicians for not having the decency to be honest with them about the reality. Yeah? I benefit from government and you know what, I’m not ashamed of it. Everyone fucking does.

Conservatives liking “big government” fits right in with everything else that seems to derive from conservatism: I only care about it if it affects me directly.
