I actually had this debate with a Music Appreciation Teacher in college. I won.

It takes a long time to prove “staying power”. We won’t be alive to know which of the modern artists will be recognized in 100 years. You can’t look at the Beatles or Led Zepplin and ask if they will have the staying power of Mozart. No one knew in Mozart’s time that his music would still be played in the 21st Century.

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that The Beatles will be recognized 100 years down the line.

As will Brian Wilson.
