I suppose that depends on which part of the Navy, in aviation it was not so:
An A-6
An AN/ARC-59 (pronounced βan A-N arc fifty-nine,β an airborne UHF radio set)
NAVAIRSYSCOM (there is only one Naval Air Systems Command, so βaβ or βanβ do not apply)
a missilex (missile exercise)
an ENCOM drill (emissions security, or control of broadcasts)
