He was in the Marine Corps. He was taught to value his rifle, that prayer from Full Metal Jacket that begins “This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine.” is not just rhetoric to a combat Marine. His intent was to highlight is support of gun owners rights and his military record.

In normal civilian life, one can show support of gun rights (which I do support), and NEVER HAVE A PHOTO of oneself cradling a gun in combat gear.
