re: #470 Dr Lizardo

My dad told me the story (apocryphal, I assume) that Mac left a couple of US Army nurses behind when he evacuated the Philippines. Apparently, there was no room for them.

See, he’d evacuated his office furniture and sadly, those poor nurses just had to suck it up and stay behind.

Another story he told me was about MacArthur’s “I have returned” newsreel footage - it was filmed more than once. In one instance, he got knocked over by a wave. Heh.

I had heard about the filming though not about the nurses. He should have been shot for how criminally unprepared the PI was for the war. Still I will grant the one thing he did well was managing the Japanese transition to democracy after the war.

I have little regard for most of our generals in WWII. The best two were not on the field of battle - Ike & Marshall. Patton or Bradley? Who cares! At least they weren’t quite as bad as Monty but that’s not saying much.

No, we won the war despite our generals because we had such excellent officers at the company to brigade level able to deal with situations as they happened. See Ltc (later 4 star & tank namesake) Creighton Abrams or Capt Charles B. MacDonald (author of several volumes about the battle of the Bulge as well as the exquisite memoir “Company Commander”)
