We’ve been a one-party state before. A new party always arises (the collapse of Democratic-Republicans gave us the Democrats, the collapse of the Federalists gave us the Whigs, the collapse of the Whigs gave us the Republicans, and so forth).

I’m not disputing that but I think Ike worried about that possibility in the post WWII era when we had just fought a totalitarian one party state. I agree completely that it would have been better had Ike ran as a Democrat. I’m just giving my two cents on why I think Ike ran as a Republican.
