re: #496 Gus

Backgrounder on Ghezali. He was held in Gitmo from 2002 until 2004 when he was transferred to Sweden. Swedish authorities refused to press charges, and released him in 2004.

Ghezali was reportedly a Swedish citizen, with Algerian and Finnish origins. He had been held at the US’s Guantanamo Bay detainment camp on Cuba from 2002 to 2004, having previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He was released to Swedish custody in 2004, and the Swedish government did not press charges. He was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan in 2009.

All this assumes that this is the guy involved in this particular attack.

If we’re going to play the blame game, it would be on who? Bush Administration for releasing him in 2004? Swedish authorities who didn’t press charges in 2004? Authorities (who?) who didn’t keep him in custody in 2009?

BTW, the Michigan driver’s license provided an address of a casino in Baton Rouge Louisiana. That should have been a tipoff that it was a bogus license but we’ve yet to come by a passport.
