re: #501 HappyWarrior

I need to visit a presidential library one day. One of my professors at GMU, Richard Norton Smith was director of quite a few of the Republican ones. Fascinating guy. He taught a class on the US presidency and when we learned about Jerry Ford, he pops in a tape of him giving one of the eulogies at the funeral in Michigan. I wonder what he’s thinking about Trump and all this. He was from what I understand a liberal Republican since he got his start working for Ed Brooke in Massachusetts. Not sure if he still was one when he taught the class. He was fair though.

I’ve told this story on here before but…

On the day of finalizing my divorce at the Edward Brooke courthouse in Boston back in 2004 there was a media frenzy …

After filing papers stating their intent to marry, the couples in Boston walked quickly to Brooke Courthouse where they obtained waivers allowing them to forgo the required three-day waiting period before marriage.

They then returned to City Hall to receive marriage licenses.

Mayor Thomas Menino personally welcomed Compton and Wilson, as well as two other plaintiff couples — Mike Horgan and Ed Balmelli, and Hillary and Julie Goodridge. It was Goodridge for whom the lawsuit was named after

“We’ve broken down the barrier,” said Menino at City Hall. “I am so proud of these people. I am very proud to be mayor of this city today.”

And I am proud to have been there that day, even if for other reasons.
