It’s more than that. Whether it’s distrust of foreigners, or ‘loss of sovereignty’, there has long been a deep-seated hatred of any multinational organizations. Much of it may just be the same old “the Cool Kids are making fun of me!” resentment that fuels much of the Right, but it predates Putin and Trump. The NatSec-type Republicans dominated the party for decades, and they, of course, understood the importance of alliances, but there was always this undercurrent among the rank-and-vile base that was simultaneously isolationist and belligerent.

I’m old enough to remember a few “Get US Out of the United Nations!” billboards. Often located near the “Impeach Earl Warren” signs.
