A lot of rural folks bag on big cities because they’re simply afraid of big cities.

Hell, I’ve had people in Pennsylvania tell me they would never go to NYC, not even to visit. I know people in small towns in PA who have never ventured out of the county they were born in.

Fact is, a lot of them would get chewed up and spat out if they tried to make it in big cities, so it’s easier for them to stay where they are and snipe at those who got out into the world.

The Irish have a term for family members who leave their environs - the ‘wild goose.’ I was the wild goose in my family, and a few of my family members cannot understand why I moved away all those years ago. They probably never will.

There I go, sounding like a damn elitist.

And when city folk bag on the rurals for being conservative and racist and stuff, they always leave out New Mexico for some reason. We are so rural, we are sub-rural. The Feds call us ‘frontier’. But predominantly Dem, and we have racists, but not very many, and they still stay quiet, for the most part.
