They grossly underestimated the situation. They left the vast majority of their hardware on the Sulaco because they didn’t think they would need it. They were pretty sure that they were “rescuing colonists daughters from their virginity” after a “bug hunt” and not fighting a swarm of alien warrior drones.

They were also being led by an incompetent lieutenant and the corporate adviser with a shady hidden agenda.

Mistakes were made.
