I’m pretty sure they are house finches. The unknown bird may be a juvenile female cardinal. Here’s a pair of goldfinches in a photo taken this time of year:

Are you seeing a crest on the unknown that I’m not? That head looks pretty rounded to me, and that looks like yellow as well, just not as intense as in the pic you added, maybe due to the light?

But I’m not going to fight too much, and you may be right that the bill’s just too tall for a goldfinch.
