That’s exactly what they said about my grandparents, and the other million or so Eastern European Jewish immigrants of their generation. They don’t speak English, their religion is different than ours, they’re driving down wages by working so cheap…

It was all true, of course.

The same for the million or so Italian Catholic immigrants of the same time span; they faced marginally less resistance in at least one category, because the Irish Catholics who’d been here for 50 years at least didn’t object to the Catholic part of their identity.

What is the most appalling are those Americans whose grandparents or great grandparents came here in those waves of immigration who are fervent Trump supporters and who demonize the newer immigrants.
