Beliefs do not deserve respect. Would you respect someone’s belief if they wanted to kill or enslave you? Would you respect someone’s belief that the moon is made of cheese? Would you respect someone’s belief that their speedometer is in error? Would you respect someone’s belief that 2+2=42? We don’t respect beliefs in science, and we wouldn’t approve of beliefs over hard evidence if our own life was on the line, but we feel a great urge to respect religious beliefs. Why? What’s the point? If what a person believes is really true, why are they so afraid of criticism? Doesn’t the truth persist in the face of criticism? Why not question?
