trumps first attempt at any public service was the presidency

that should have been enough to tell everyone what they needed to know:
that he knew nothing that he needed to know

that was seen as a benefit: an outsider, an anti-politician coming in to kick some ass and shake things up.

It allowed him to get away with things that would have derailed the campaigns or even careers of most professional politicians.
