re: #474 Killgore Trout

I’m not crazy about the mystical element being the culmination of the story. I was hoping there would be some sort of sci-fi explanation like maybe Jacob and smokey are stranded time travelers or part of an alien race who could bend the laws of physics.
To have all this end with Jack and Sawyer replacing God and the devil to continue the same epic struggle for all of humanity just seems a little dull and cheap to me.

Some observations, from watching the episode last night and browsing the popular LOST blogs… just some things to think about.

1) This is not God and the Devil. Those metaphors were used for Richard’s benefit, it was 1867, he was a poor Spanish peasant, the religious talk was the “hook” needed to manipulate him. This is not God and Satan.

2) It will be “science” that explains all, for those of us who want the sci-fi answer, for those who want the mysticism, it will be there too. This show has always had a the science/supernatural duality going on.

3) The producers once said “look to the stars” for an answer. Talk out in the blogosphere after last nights episode is that this Island is a “cork” a gatekeeper for a wormhole. What’s at the other end of that wormhole… that’s the “sickness.” The physics all point to wormholes, the Casimir Effect etc.

4) Bonus point… check EW site later today, the producers had a podcast going online… and they will announce the title of the final episode.
