re: #507 mmmirele

When I was an undergrad ar UT Austin, the Klan would show up for a rally at the state capitol. Because of an incident in 1983, the cops would turn out in force and then plead with students to PLEASE stay away. Of course, being young and looking for fun, of course we’d go and protest the Klan. So there’d be less than a dozen Klansmen, hundreds of cops and over 10,000 howling Austinites, Keeping Austin Weird. Good times good times.

Either in 1987 or 1988, the Klan tried to hold a march in Abilene, TX. While the city had to allow it on 1st amendment grounds, enough people showed up to protest that the Klan cancelled it. Abilene didn’t and doesn’t have the best race record, but at least people didn’t want that.
