The obsession with national anthems, national flags, and such, really is a military obsession.

And this is one thing which the wingnuts really fear - that the less militaristically minded might win the day.

and again: those who are really clueless as to what it really means to be patriotic or to be an American are the ones who fixate the most on the symbols and public displays that have come to be associated with them.
