A neighbor and I were speaking and she was telling me about shopping at the flea market, “I really Jew’d em down!” I looked at her, “You know I’m Jewish, right? Why did you say that?” She replied she didn’t mean anything by it, she just got a good deal. I told her never to say it again and it’s an insult.

Gyp is another one. I was gypped. Not nice for Gypsies. Jerry-rigged. Not nice for germans. Indian-giver… Welsh rabbit…no rabbit in it/politically correct is “rare”-bit. Oddly “fairy” (farie) was the polite expression for the gay, but was used too often.”Negro” used to be polite and “black” the more vulgar.
Language fascinates me.
