A meat salesman who sold to my dad’s store took me aside one day and told me about his experience on that march and his imprisonment. He talked all afternoon. My dad, I guess, wondered where I’d been for so long (I was working) came back to where we were, and when he listened and found out what the salesman was telling me, turned around and went back into the store. I guess it was time I started to face reality.

Read Donald Knox’ “Death March”—all told from first-hand accounts of survivors. It’s a book which will make you hate the Japanese of that era.
