Buchanan is a racist, and nobody’s denying that. But it’s still entirely feasible that not every statement of his that could be racist, is racist. Nail the coonskin to the wall was a phrase used by LBJ during the Vietnam war. That’s Buchanan’s era. It’s just as credible an explanation as Buchanan’s well-known racism.
