No, it’s the first time a F-35 has crashed. It wasn’t part of any operation, it crashed in South Carolina. The first combat operational use occurred in Afghanistan, completely unrelated to the crash

It crashed about a half hour up the road from where I work, right around lunchtime. Weather was mostly clear and calm, a pretty quiet, nice Friday, nothing stressful going on. My guess is mechanical failure shortly after takeoff (probably something to do with that cockamamie lift fan system). My boss was in Beaufort around that time, I don’t know if he saw anything. I’m on a 4-9s-and-a-4 schedule this week and was already back across the border in civilization (Georgia) when I heard the news.

I love things with wings, but the F-35 is The Plane That Should Not Be. I can’t like them or give a shit about them, really… Big freaking waste of expertise and $ as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad the pilot got out, and that no rich white people were harmed in the making of this crater.
