I remember all this stuff so clearly, since for years integration and civil rights were by far the biggest stories anywhere in the South. Almost every demonstration, march, sit-in or other action brought out swarms of white politicians and just general racists, as well as newspaper editorials, claiming the protesters were agitators “paid by Russia.”

The same kinds of crazy accusations fly today from the same kinds of racists and RWNJs, but for some reason none of them uses the “paid by Russia” line. Wonder why.
