Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour auctioned off 120 guitars at Christie’s today, and his white Fender Stratocaster - serial number #0001, arguably the first Strat ever built, pulled down over $1.8 million dollars. This is the guitar in question:
Many of his guitars pulled down record-setting numbers, including a Martin acoustic that went for over a million (surpassing the amount paid for one of Eric Clapton’s acoustics), and a Les Paul Gold Top set a new record amount for a Les Paul at $447,000.
I was lucky enough to have been invited by a Christie’s member to view the collection on Monday, and I was astounded at the number and quality of the guitars up for auction.
And good on Gilmour - he donated all of the proceeds to various charities.
