Haven’t you noticed the pattern? Each whacky GOP candidate’s dirty laundry got aired when they surged. Bachmann’s “pray away the gay” husband, then Perry’s derogatory stone, Cain’s women, then all Newt’s baggage. Paul became the frontrunner in Iowa when Newt started back down, so it was his turn. Before that, he was just crazy uncle Ron who noone outside his cult took seriously.

In other words, they all got what they wished for.
