re: #17 Mattand

I’m really beginning to think that there’s something else going here other than the whole “I’m Libertarian, therefore they’re all the same to me” delusion. Said Libertarian* made a really nasty and misogynistic and, in my mind, out-of-character, comment about Maddow within the last year.

It sticks in my mind because it was along the lines of Richard Grennell’s “You look like a dude” insult. It’s also one of maybe 4 comments I’ve ever downdinged since I started bloviating here.

Again, if you don’t like Maddow or her views, that’s your prerogative. But to insist that she’s no different than Beck is just delusional.

*IMO, “classic liberal” is a fancy way to admit to being Libertarian without actually saying it. From what I’ve read (thanks, Obdicut), there’s very little daylight between the two.

Gentle reminder, there are many flavors of libertarian. Just because conservatives (who claim to be right leaning libertarians) use the term ‘classical liberal is libertarian’ doesn’t mean it describes libertarianism as a whole.

I don’t think it’s a MBF or delusion to say that neither Democrats or Republicans have any interest in reducing the role of Government. It just so happens their focus on which parts of government they like to grow differs. Now that’s not to say that Democrats and Republicans are exactly alike. That’s absolutely the furthest from the truth. I personally would prefer the world the Democrats would create over the nightmare that Republicans would build… But I still personally feel the role of government should be a small as reasonably possible. the concept of hate crimes creeps a little close to thought crimes. personal use of drugs in your own home, prostitution. There are a slew of other things that the government has a role in that I find questionable.

But you know what? I realize that a ‘perfect’ libertarian world wouldn’t be a very good one. Neither would a ‘pure’ republican vision, or a democrat, or socialist. Maybe the term for me is ‘realistic’ Libertarian. Because I would rather accept a little more government for the betterment of all of us. But to keep that as limited as possible. ;)
