See, the Reagan like fanaticism that the Communists were automatically bad is silly.

To be blunt, our side did some truly horrific things during the Cold War. The biggest of which was our support for Pakistan during the the 1971 South Asian War. We supported a genocide on Bangladesh, one that killed 1.5 to 3 million in just 9 months. The rate of Murder exceeded even the Holocaust.

That should and will be a millstone around the neck of the US for the rest of this nation’s existence. To the USSR’s credit, they supported India in that War, and prevented us and the PRC from intervening. We should be giving aid to Bangladesh, lots of it, until we have atoned for not only letting it happen again, but then supporting it.

But, not my worry. If the Catholic Church doesn’t evolve, they become will weaken massively.

Some Communists were good people (saying ‘a few’ or ‘most’ is problematic), but Communism as practiced was a horror.

China was too damaged by its own internal turmoils in 1971 to be able to act and the US wasn’t going to mount a major intervention while still involved in Vietnam.

The liberation of Bangladesh was also the only time the Soviet PT-76 amphibious tank did well against other tanks. Against US tanks in Cambodia in 1970 and South Vietnam in 1972 (in the latter case crewed solely by the ARVN) the PT-76 was badly worsted. It’s use in Bangladesh’s rivers redeemed it, only to have it again come up short against Israel in 1973.
