re: #514 Targetpractice

I get a chuckle anytime a wingnut tries to cite Reagan’s tax cuts as a “success.” The country dipped immediately back into recession and UE topped out at 10% before Reagan knuckled under and agreed to what was the first of a series of tax increases to deal with the budget deficit. And even with those, the outrageous increases in defense spending and the end of the Cold War quadrupled the national debt and drove the country into a recession that helped elected Bill Clinton. The only way you get the whole “25 years” bullshit is if you just ignore the ‘93 tax increases that the GOP predicted would lead to a massive recession but instead drove the economy to heights it hadn’t seen in decades and allowed Bill to leave office with the budget turning a surplus.

Reagan gets way too much credit but I think the honest to God reason why conservatives love Reagan so much is he was a two time winner and a big winner at that. Hopefully we’ll start looking more critically at his administration’s legacy in the years to come. I firmly believe Reagan was a bad president and history will see that.
