Is that how we got “art” (Thou art…)? As in You are too an ass…
My guess is that “art” is some sort of conjugation of “are” since we have “you are” and “thou art.”
Fun fact: “You” used to be plural (thou being singular.) When ‘you’ expanded to include the singular, it was unclear for a while whether one should use a singular or plural verb. That is why perfectly educated people wrote “Was you there?” and the like. Obviously, the plural won out even when “you” is singular, giving us “you were” even when referring to one person.
