That works both ways since there are multiple cases of academics who did good solid work and then got sucked up their own assholes* and went 180/full bore into all sorts of bad places. IIRC, David Irving at one point was respected for some of his work regarding Rommel.

* - Might be some variant of the “brain eater” where an author goes from making good work to simply churning out crap. Often accompanied by a large ego preventing anyone from helping them properly edit a work.
