When I joined a year later, we still had some of the old righty types: albusteve, brookyred, Walter, Reine, Mandy but I found most people easy to get along with. It’s a pity a lot of those people couldn’t adjust to the blog’s leftward turn. But there are other longtime lizards whom I’m always shocked were staunchly conservative as recently as ten years ago.

Sometimes reasonable people can and do make common cause with crazy, bigoted, or ignorant people over a reasonable issue. The longer you hangout with them, the more likely their crazy bullshit starts to seem normal and OK.

9/11 and the years following did that to a lot of people. Lizards that are still here that joined back then, are generally the decent people who eventually recognized that it happened or was happening to them and backed away from the edge before it was too late.

The Great Creationist Purge was the beginning of that for many of us.
