This is an apology for the way I previously handled the Gates issue. My “solution” to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with American principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and I deserve the criticism I’ve received. I will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match my fellow Americans.
