Most people would consider Big Sur central coast and not part of the Bay Area. I live in the South Bay (as we call it), which includes San Jose. Gilroy, of garlic fame, is …borderline. I think most people wouldn’t classify that as Bay Area, ultimately.

Santa Cruz is actually considered over the mountains (or over the hill, as is said here) and typically excluded as well from a more local point of view. The culture is certainly very different.

But even Big Sur is warming up, for them.

I see. I did wonder about that since looking at a map the Big Sur area definitely looks too North to be Southern California but I wondered if it was north enough to be Bay Area. It looks quite nice. My brother, his wife, and daughter just moved out to Lake Tahoe this past week and when I visit this summer, we’re planning a camping trip to Big Sur or maybe Yosemite. It’s an exciting move for them. I have a feeling he’s going to love Tahoe since he’s an outdoorsy type.
