And like clockwork, a wingnut arguing with me about how a deregulated health insurance market could lead to sick people being able to get insurance without government “interference” brings up LASIK as “proof” that the market can bring down prices and help more people if left to its own devices. Except just cursory research turned up that LASIK clinics have time and again been the subject of government investigations for deceptive advertising, promising “cheap” surgery only for the person to find out that it’s gonna cost $1-2,000 per eye, instead of $299 per eye advertised.

Plus which, nobody ever died from not being able to get Lasik. Market forces work great for things people can live without.
