My mom’s family comes from Croatia before WWI (thak God), I have tried to sort out the clusterf*ck of my family’s historical background.

Best thing I have found on it is Danubia, a historical work that starts to explain why the place was such a mess.

What you have in the region are people with very long memories. I do remember hearing about that book. Mine got out a few years before WWI too but I imagine like yours stil had some family there. Found that they’re actually pretty close to the Slovene-Croat border. That side though has been the least researched though given the scarcity of records that do exist.
