I’ve gotten into a lot of arguments with Berniebots when they still hold on to the delusion that he would have won. I ask them if they lived through the 1972 Presidential Campaign and they often say “no”.

I remind them of the Nixon campaign’s total character assassination of McGovern.

The first line of attack came from the GOP chairman who repeatedly said that McGovern supported “Red Henry Wallace” for President in 1948.

Then John Conolly (who was still a DINO) went on TV and said he had set up “Democrats for Nixon”. And that’s where the real character assassination was cranked up to 11. They showed commercials with a spinning picture of McGovern allegedly talking out of both sides of his mouth. Next came a commercial showing toy soldiers getting smashed with a hammer while the announcer (Lorne Greene) said Mc Govern was going to cripple our military. Next came the picture of Jane Fonda standing next to McGovern. Then they attacked McGovern’s support for the Negative Income Tax (a Milton Friedman proposal that Nixon originally proposed in 1969 to replace Social Security and Welfare programs by giving everyone a basic minimum income). McGovern was going to give every lazy colored person $1,000 a year! The cherry on the cake came when the AFL-CIO decided to commit suicide with Meany, Kirkland and I W Abel of the Steelworkers joining with the Teamsters Union to back Nixon.

In the end, Mc Govern wound up carrying only DC and Massachusetts.

The RepubliKKKlans would have had a mass orgasm if Bernie had been nominated. Start with that first line of attack where Bernie was on the Socialist Workers electoral slate in 1980. Add in those sex articles he wrote in the 70s. Now what do you think Franky Graham KKKraKKKer and the Pulpit Pimps would have done with them? Next a “Democrats for Trump” group headed by LIEberman. Next they would go after Bernie’s failure to pass major legislation. Then comes his wife’s finances. Add in commercials of fast food workers getting $15 dollars an hour while white struggle with less. Then all those lazy colored people getting a free college education. The attacks would be coming from all sides and in the end Bernie would have been slaughtered. He would have wound up beaten worse than McGovern or Mondale. He would have probably even lost DC to Trump and he would barely get the 3 Vermont electoral votes. Trump would have slaughtered him 535-3 in the electoral college. And the GOP would have had substantial gains in both houses…
