The horse belongs to a British officer before she is lost in a dice game, ends up pulling a cart, and then gets ‘liberated’ by Sam Adams, who gives her to Revere because he needs one for his ‘work’.

The horse is a staunch Loyalist, of course, and much of the plot revolves around her gradually coming to accept and identify with the colonists’ cause. I also like it because although very suitable for children, it gives a good sense of some of the more serious episodes of the Revolution—the horse is in Boston with the Revere family when the blockade happens.

There’s also a very memorable and funny scene when Mrs. Revere carefully shakes out Revere’s clothes after the Boston Tea Party and extracts enough tea to have the neighbor ladies over the next day for refreshments.

I would recommend the book to Mrs. Palin very highly—to read to Piper and then Trig, of course.
